The size of the I-wheel generally depends on the size of the steel wire and the power of the steel wire rope twisting equipment. The diameter of the outer edge of the common I-wheel is 300~500mm. The speed of hanging basket type wire rope twisting equipment is slow, about tens to more than 100 revolutions per minute, rarely more than 150 revolutions. Due to the slow rotation speed, the twisted strand has the characteristics of full deformation, compact structure and low twisting stress. It is mainly used for twisting coarse specifications, ordinary structure special-shaped strand wire ropes, single-twist sealed wire ropes and round strands. Due to the low production efficiency, most of the strands are twisted without basket-type wire rope twisting equipment.
Tubular wire rope twisting equipment consists of one or several barrels. The wire feeding I-wheel is arranged in a straight line along the center of the machine body. The I-wheel is always level when setting out. The high-speed rotation of the cylinder cooperates with the linear traction generated by the traction device, so that the steel wire is spirally wound and the steel strand moves in a straight line to form a steel strand with a certain twist length, thus completing the basic twisting action of the steel strand. Compared with the basket machine, the twisting principle is the same, but the structure is significantly improved. It has the advantages of small size, low center of gravity, small moment of inertia, fast running speed, low noise, stable operation and convenient operation. It is suitable for twisting most strands, Especially wire contact steel strand and steel strand. Some special devices can be added, and the twisted surface can also contact the wire rope strands and special-shaped strands. The rotating speed of tube type wire rope twisting equipment is 400~5000 r/min minutes. According to the number of barrel sections and equipment power, it can be composed of 6~36 I-wheels, up to 48 I-wheels, with a length of 60m. The diameter of the outer edge of the tubular I-wheel is 100~630mm.
In order to meet the needs of effective production, in the 1950 s, some countries in Europe and the United States began to apply tubular wire rope twisting equipment. This equipment does not have the same barrel as the tube machine, the moment of inertia is smaller, and the operating speed is further improved than the tube machine, generally reaching 1000~6000 r/min. Tubeless machines produced in the UK rotate at speeds of up to 10000 r/min. In the 1970 s, Italy developed two tubeless wire rope twisting equipment. One is a two-for-one twister, which is used to produce small-gauge steel wire strands and steel cords. The other is rope skipping equipment, with a bow board instead of a tubular barrel. As a wire, the bow board has a compact structure and light weight. It can rotate around the cradle to produce an operation similar to skipping rope. The machine body can be equipped with 3~12 I-shaped wheels with a rotating speed of 2000~9000 r/min, and the rotating speed of small I-shaped wheels can reach 10000 r/min.
